Movie Review, Day 9: "42"

Day 9
Movie: "42"
Ticket Price: $8.75
Showtime: 1:10 pm
Rating: PG-13
Running Time: 2 hours, 8 minutes
Jackie Robinson, baseball's first African-American player, wasn't playing on the Brooklyn Dodgers to make friends, he just wanted to play ball. Chadwick Boseman plays an excellent Robinson, and the surrounding cast of actors, including Harrison Ford, makes this movie brilliant. I don't know much about baseball, and I didn't know much about Jackie Robinson, yet I still found this movie entertaining and exciting. You want to see Jackie hold his tongue to all the awful names he's called by white men, women, and children. You want to see him succeed in spite of the fact that his race was the initial deterrent to his success.

Watching this film, you can really feel as if you were in the 1940's amidst rampant segregation. That word was used frequently in this movie, and it still makes my skin crawl to hear it beings used, even if it's only for a movie. It's such an emotionally charged word, that one. In some ways, this movie shows how much our great nation has changed over the pasted few decades, but unfortunately, it can also remind us of how it hasn't.

Starring: Chadwick Boseman, Harrison Ford, Christopher Meloni, Nicole Beharie, Lucas Black

My Rating: 8.5/10
Josh's Rating: 8/10 or 9/10, he refuses to do decimals, haha!
IMDB's Rating: 7.6/10
Do we recommend the film: Absolutely! This movie is more than just a sports drama: it gives us a glimpse into our past and present, our society, and ourselves.

  1. I loved this movie! I was surprised at how emotional I got, I wasn't expecting for all the tears over what I thought was just going to be another baseball movie. I recommend this one too!

    1. Yeah, it was a highly emotional movie! I cried a few times, to be honest. One of the best sports movies in a while.

  2. I don't know much about Jackie Robinson but I do like baseball. Well, ok, I haven't followed it much in recent years but there was a time when I was a baseball junkie.

Hubby will probably watch this on pay per view, so maybe I'll watch too.
